Understanding MAiD
What is MAiD?
MAiD is a legal health-care process in Canada through which an eligible person may receive assistance from a physician or nurse practitioner to end their life.
Who Can Request It?
Eligibility is determined by qualified assessors under federal law. Requirements include being at least 18, eligible for publicly funded health care, capable of making health-care decisions, making a voluntary request, giving informed consent, and meeting the legal definition of a grievous and irremediable medical condition.
A Personal Decision
Only the person requesting MAiD can make the request and provide consent. A person may withdraw their request at any time. Family members and substitute decision-makers cannot request MAiD on another person’s behalf.
